Good vs. Bad Party
What is it that separates a fantastic party from a party so lame that even the most eager party people starts looking at their watches? I have been thinking a lot about this ever since I decided to arrange the best birthday party ever for my husband.
I think it’s important to be aware of what makes a boring or ok party, so that you can avoid it. And of course you need to know what makes a great party in order to have just that!
I have estimated that I would classify the larties I have been to over the last few years like this:
Bad: 20%
OK: 50%
Great: 30%
The numbers are a little different if you count all the weddings I’ve been to as well because they all belong to the category “Great”.
But what seperates the great from the bad or ok parties?
Bad parties
To arrange a bad party you have to have made some very basic mistakes. For example:
- Too big party venue
- Poor marketing, few comes
- Terrible music/speakers
- Guests with nothing in common, with no entertainment to compensate
- Bad or embarasing entertainment
Ok parties
Must people who arrange “ok” parties don’t do much other than invite guests and perhaps serve some food. They are one category better than the bad parties because they don’t make any of the mistakes listed above.
These parties are usually just ok, because the host doesn’t put much effort into it and expects the guests to entertain themselves. This doesn’t work unless your guests know each other really well and love being together (even then you should make an effort).
Great parties
Great parties are often have in common the fact that the host has made a real effort, especially with the little details and building the atmosphere. For example:
- The party has a consistent theme
- The party has a clear plan with a beginning, middle and end
- The evening is full o diversions and surprises (competitions, showing relevant movies/pictures, unusual speeches, party trix etc)
- Suitable entertainment and music
- The guests includes some bright and lively people
So I guess the lesson here is to make it fun by making an effort
